I’m Janet Wood, a singer/songwriter, community musician and choir facilitator based in Retford, Nottinghamshire. I work at darts, Doncaster Community Arts. Through my work I met Simon Banda, an inspirational singer, dancer and drummer from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He became my partner three years ago and we had great hopes and ambitions for the future, but in December 2012 he died suddenly after a very short illness. To mark the anniversary of his passing I am travelling to Zimbabwe to create a new body of work based on his life and music, working with his former group Sunduza and other musicians who loved and respected him. Working in partnership with Simon’s eldest son Charlie, I shall write and record new songs, perform at Bulawayo’s Ibumba Festival, and use the resulting material in performances and workshops in the UK.
